Potassium-transporting ATPase subunit beta (ATP4B)

Target
ATP4B
Molecular classification
P-type cation transporters, Enzyme, Transporter
01

Overview

The potassium-transporting ATPase subunit beta is a component of the gastric H+/K+ ATPase, an enzyme complex crucial for acid secretion in the stomach. Encoded by the *ATP4B* gene, it belongs to the family of P-type cation-transporting ATPases. This protein serves as the non-catalytic, regulatory glycoprotein component of the gastric H+/K+ ATPase pump. It is essential for proper assembly and stability of the functional complex and facilitates correct targeting and insertion into cellular membranes. This pump exchanges intracellular hydrogen ions (H+) for extracellular potassium ions (K+) across the apical membrane of gastric parietal cells, enabling acidification of stomach contents. Defects or dysregulation can lead to disorders impacting digestive function.
