Potassium voltage-gated channel-interacting protein 1 (KCNIP1)

Target
KCNIP1
Molecular classification
Ion channel regulatory subunit, Auxiliary subunit (Kv channel-interacting protein), EF-hand-containing protein, Neuronal calcium sensor family member

Overview

Potassium voltage-gated channel-interacting protein 1 (KCNIP1) is a cytosolic protein belonging to the neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) family of EF-hand calcium-binding proteins. It acts as a regulatory subunit for Kv4 (Shal-type) voltage-gated rapidly inactivating A-type potassium channels, modulating their channel density, inactivation kinetics, and recovery in a calcium-dependent, isoform-specific manner. KCNIP1 is crucial in controlling neuronal membrane excitability and may respond dynamically to changes in intracellular calcium. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms. Dysregulation or mutation of KCNIP1 has been associated with epilepsy and blood pressure abnormalities[1][2][3][7].
