Overview

KCNS1 encodes the **Potassium voltage-gated channel modifier subfamily S member 1**, a regulatory (electrically silent) subunit of the voltage-gated potassium channel family. It does not form functional channels by itself but modulates the activity of functional alpha subunits of other potassium channels, particularly KCNB1 and KCNB2, by altering their kinetics, voltage-dependence, and expression levels. KCNS1 is implicated in the regulation of neuronal excitability and modulation of action potential firing, and variants in KCNS1 have been associated with inherited episodes of pain. Dysfunction or altered expression of KCNS1-containing channel complexes may thus contribute to neuropathic pain conditions[2].
