Kv1.2 is a voltage-gated potassium channel that plays crucial roles in regulating neuronal excitability and action potential dynamics. It is encoded by the KCNA2 gene and belongs to the Shaker-related subfamily of voltage-gated potassium channels. Kv1.2 forms tetrameric potassium-selective channels that allow potassium ions to pass through cell membranes according to their electrochemical gradient. It is widely distributed throughout the body, with high expression in the brain, central nervous system, and heart. Kv1.2 channels are essential for normal neuronal function, preventing hyperexcitability and modulating synaptic transmission. They are also implicated in cardiovascular function through the regulation of vascular tone. Kv1.2 channels can be blocked by toxins like Dendrotoxins and Charybdotoxin.
