Overview

Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily C member 1 (KCNC1), also known as Kv3.1, is an integral membrane protein that functions as a voltage-gated potassium channel. It mediates the voltage-dependent permeability of potassium ions across excitable membranes, playing a crucial role in repolarizing the membrane potential after action potentials. Kv3.1 channels are predominantly expressed in neurons that fire at high frequency, and are essential for enabling high-frequency action potential generation. Variants or dysfunctions in KCNC1 have been associated with neurological disorders due to its critical role in neuronal excitability.
