Overview

Potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily C member 2 (KCNC2) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a voltage-gated potassium channel, primarily expressed in the brain. It belongs to the delayed rectifier class of potassium channels and plays a critical role in mediating the voltage-dependent permeability of excitable membranes to potassium ions. The main physiological function of KCNC2 is to enable rapid repolarization during action potentials, supporting high-frequency neuronal firing without significant accommodation or fatigue. Mutations or dysfunctions in KCNC2 have been linked to neurological disorders such as Developmental And Epileptic Encephalopathy 103 and other developmental epileptic encephalopathies.
