Overview

Kv7 channels, also known as KCNQ channels, are a family of voltage-gated potassium (K+) channels encoded by the KCNQ1–KCNQ5 genes. These channels play critical roles in regulating cellular excitability in various tissues including the heart, brain, muscles (smooth and skeletal), sensory cells (auditory and vestibular organs), and epithelia. They are tetrameric assemblies of six-transmembrane-segment α-subunits, with S1–S4 forming the voltage-sensing domain (VSD) and S5–S6 forming the pore domain. Activation is voltage-dependent and requires PIP2. Dysfunction leads directly to major neurological and cardiovascular disorders.
