Overview

POU domain class 5, transcription factor 2 (POU5F2) is a protein-coding gene encoding a transcription factor that binds preferentially to the octamer motif (5'-ATGTTAAT-3'). It is predicted to play a regulatory role in meiotic events that are important for the terminal differentiation of male germ cells. POU5F2 is part of the POU domain protein family (class V), which are characterized by containing a homeodomain joined to a POU-specific DNA-binding domain, enabling specific sequence recognition and regulation of gene expression. Although it is classified as a transcription factor, there is currently no evidence supporting its role as a direct therapeutic target nor are there drugs or biomarkers specifically associated with this molecule. POU5F2 is related to, but distinct from, POU5F1 (OCT4), a known key regulator of pluripotency. Disease associations include certain syndromic optic atrophies and some cancer linkages, but these are not well characterized or validated as clinical targets. There are no notable safety concerns or therapeutic challenges described for this protein.
