PPARG activating RBM14 associated long non-coding RNA 1 (PARAL1) is a long intergenic non-coding RNA that acts as a regulator of adipocyte differentiation and immune cell function. It is specifically enriched in adipocytes and modulates the transcriptional activity of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) through physical association with the paraspeckle-associated RNA-binding protein RBM14. PARAL1 potentiates RBM14 coactivation of PPARγ, enhancing adipogenic processes; its expression is downregulated in obesity. Recent studies show that PARAL1 also regulates myeloid dendritic cell differentiation, modulates TLR-dependent innate immune signaling, and influences adaptive immunity by affecting antigen presentation. PARAL1 is not a therapeutic target in the traditional sense (i.e., not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor), but rather is a regulatory noncoding RNA with emerging relevance in metabolic and immunological contexts.
