Overview

PPEF1 antisense RNA 1 (PPEF1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed opposite to the PPEF1 gene, classified as an antisense long non-coding RNA (AS-lncRNA). Like other antisense RNAs, it is thought to regulate the expression of its sense gene (PPEF1) or broader gene networks, typically through mRNA binding, modulation of chromatin structure, interference during transcription initiation or elongation, or methylation of gene promoters[2][4]. The interactions between antisense long non-coding RNAs and their corresponding sense coding genes can be positive or negative and may influence cellular proliferation, invasion, and other phenotypic traits, as has been described for other antisense lncRNAs in cancer-related contexts[2][4]. However, there is currently no evidence that PPEF1-AS1 itself is established as a direct therapeutic target, nor are there drugs targeting this RNA molecule. Its biological impact may be context-dependent, and research into its specific mechanisms and disease relevance remains ongoing. Key context: PPEF1-AS1 is an antisense RNA and not a protein; its primary function is regulatory rather than serving as a druggable target.
