PR domain zinc finger protein 5 (PRDM5) is a transcription factor containing a PR (PRDI-BF1 and RIZ1 homology) domain and multiple C2H2-type zinc finger motifs. It is part of the PR-domain (PRDM) family of transcriptional regulators that are involved in cell differentiation and tumorigenesis. PRDM5 exerts regulatory control over the expression of extracellular matrix genes, particularly collagens, playing a crucial role in bone formation and maintenance via controlling gene transcription by recruiting or interacting with RNA polymerase II and modulating chromatin structure. Mutations in PRDM5 have been linked to Brittle Cornea Syndrome and alterations in bone tissue development. The protein functions predominantly as a transcriptional activator in osteoblastic cells and is implicated in epigenetic gene regulation by directly binding DNA at regulatory elements[1][3][5].
