PRDX6 antisense RNA 1 (PRDX6-AS1)

Target
PRDX6-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Non-coding antisense RNA
01

Overview

PRDX6 antisense RNA 1 (PRDX6-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA located on chromosome 1q25.1 that is transcribed in the antisense orientation relative to the PRDX6 gene. Variants in PRDX6-AS1 have been genetically associated with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and there is evidence that PRDX6-AS1 may participate in the regulation of PRDX6, a coding gene well known for its antioxidant and redox regulatory functions. While PRDX6-AS1 itself does not code for a protein or serve as a direct pharmacological target, its regulatory role may influence disease processes tied to oxidative stress and immune dysregulation[4]. No drugs directly target this lncRNA, but it may have utility as a biomarker for autoimmune disease genetic risk.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable. No drugs are known to act through PRDX6-AS1, although its regulatory impact may influence PRDX6 biology.

03

Biological functions

Potential regulation of adjacent gene expression (notably PRDX6)May participate in modulation of redox homeostasis and immune response through regulation of PRDX6 transcription[4]
04

Disease associations

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), based on genetic association studies indicating PRDX6-AS1 variants are linked to disease susceptibility[4]
05

Safety considerations

None currently known. As a non-coding RNA, direct safety concerns are not established, but as with any gene-regulatory element, manipulation could in theory have unintended effects on PRDX6 or other nearby gene activities.
06

Biomarkers

The PRDX6-AS1 SNP rs844649 may serve as a genetic biomarker for SLE susceptibility[4]
