Overview

Pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA), also known as precursor mRNA, is the initial single-stranded RNA transcript produced by transcription of a DNA template in eukaryotic cells. It serves as the direct product of gene transcription before undergoing several processing steps to become mature messenger RNA (mRNA), which can then be translated into protein. Pre-mRNAs are targets for therapeutic interventions aiming at modulating splicing patterns or correcting aberrant splicing events associated with disease states.
