A pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) splicing site is a specific sequence within a precursor mRNA transcript that signals where the removal of non-coding regions (introns) and the joining of coding regions (exons) should occur. This process, known as RNA splicing, is essential for generating mature messenger RNA (mRNA), which can then be translated into protein. Proper recognition and processing at these sites are crucial for producing functional proteins; errors can result in nonfunctional or deleterious proteins. Alternative splicing at these sites allows a single gene to produce multiple mRNA isoforms, greatly expanding proteomic diversity in eukaryotes.
