Overview
Pre-mRNA-splicing factor 18 (PRPF18) is an essential spliceosomal protein required for the second catalytic step of pre-mRNA splicing, a process fundamental to the maturation of messenger RNA in eukaryotes[2][3][4][7]. It is a WD-repeat protein closely related to the yeast splicing factor Prp18, and is tightly bound to the spliceosome during the second step of splicing[2][5]. PRPF18 participates in critical steps of mRNA processing; mutations or disruptions in this gene have been associated with rare genetic disorders involving neurodevelopment and retinal degeneration[3]. It is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, nor are there drugs known to act specifically on PRPF18.
