Overview

Pre-mRNA-splicing factor CWC25 homolog (CWC25) is a protein that acts as an essential component of the spliceosome, the large ribonucleoprotein complex responsible for removing introns from pre-mRNA in eukaryotic cells. CWC25 is specifically involved in facilitating the first catalytic reaction of splicing after the action of Prp2 and the recruitment of Yju2; it binds to spliceosomal complexes containing splicing intermediates and is required for precise alignment of the 5′ splice site and branch point. CWC25 works in concert with other splicing factors but is not tightly associated with the NTC (nineteen complex), and is released from the spliceosome after the completion of the first reaction. It is classified as a coiled-coil domain-containing protein and is not known to act as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or established therapeutic target. While CWC25 is conserved across species and necessary for cellular RNA processing, there is currently no evidence of its direct involvement as a biomarker or druggable target in human disease.
