Overview

The prebiotic effect is a physiological phenomenon defined by the selective utilization of substrates by host microorganisms, which confers a health benefit to the host (Gibson et al., 2017; PMID: 28611480). It is not a single molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, but rather a complex biological process involving the fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates, such as inulin and various oligosaccharides, by beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus (Slavin, 2013; PMID: 23609775). This fermentation leads to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are critical for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity, regulating immune responses, and influencing systemic metabolic health (Markowiak & Śliżewska, 2017; PMID: 28914794). Therapeutically, the prebiotic effect is leveraged to manage gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic syndrome, and inflammatory conditions by shifting the microbiome toward a more favorable profile (Davani-Davari et al., 2019; PMID: 30857316). While generally safe, high doses of prebiotic substrates can lead to gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating and flatulence due to rapid gas production during fermentation.

Mechanism of action

Selective fermentation of non-digestible substrates by beneficial host microorganisms, primarily in the colon, resulting in the production of metabolites such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which lower luminal pH and modulate host physiology (Gibson et al., 2017; PMID: 28611480).
