Overview

Prefrontal cortex synaptic density describes the number of synapses present in the prefrontal cortex. Synapses are specialized junctions that enable communication between neurons via electrical and chemical signals. The density of these synapses changes dynamically throughout development, peaking during early childhood and declining during adolescence through a process called synaptic pruning[3]. Regional differences within the cortex are evident, with higher synaptic density observed in associative areas such as the prefrontal cortex, supporting complex cognitive processing, learning, and flexibility[1][3]. Measurement is typically indirect, using markers such as synaptophysin and SV2A via immunohistochemistry or PET imaging[2][5]. Altered synaptic density in the prefrontal cortex is implicated in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases and developmental disorders[2][5].
