Overview

Pregnancy-specific beta-1-glycoprotein 4 (PSG4) is a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily and specifically the PSG subgroup. It is synthesized in large amounts by placental trophoblast cells and released into maternal circulation during pregnancy. PSG4 may have roles in modulating the innate immune response and mediating cell adhesion via integrin interaction, owing to its RGD motif. The gene is located on chromosome 19 within a cluster of related PSG genes. Several transcript variants and isoforms exist due to alternative splicing. PSG4 is not currently considered a receptor, enzyme, or other direct drug target. Instead, its medical relevance is primarily as a potential biomarker in pregnancy-related disorders and certain cancers, although further research is needed for definitive clinical utility
