Pregnancy-specific beta-1-glycoprotein 8 (PSG8) is a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) family within the immunoglobulin superfamily and is one of several PSGs expressed by placental trophoblast cells and secreted into maternal blood during pregnancy[2]. PSGs are implicated in modulating maternal immune tolerance, cell adhesion, and possibly signaling. PSG8 contains multiple immunoglobulin-like domains and a predicted secretory signal sequence, consistent with its role as a secreted glycoprotein. Its expression is tightly controlled and largely restricted to the placenta. While PSGs in general are studied as biomarkers for pregnancy progression and certain pathologies, the specific biological role and disease associations of PSG8 are not well defined, and it is not a recognized drug target[2].
