Premature stop codon readthrough refers to the process by which the ribosome bypasses a premature termination codon (PTC) during translation, allowing for continued protein synthesis and potentially restoring full-length, functional protein in cases where a nonsense mutation would otherwise truncate it. This phenomenon can occur naturally at low frequencies or be induced pharmacologically or genetically as a therapeutic strategy for genetic diseases caused by nonsense mutations.
