Overview

Melanocyte protein PMEL (PMEL), also known as premelanosome protein, is a pigment cell-specific type I transmembrane glycoprotein primarily expressed in melanosomes. It plays a central role in the formation of fibrillar sheets within the melanosome, serving as templates for melanin polymerization. PMEL undergoes complex post-translational modifications and its expression is regulated by MITF. It is used diagnostically as an immunohistochemical marker for melanoma and secreted forms may serve as serum biomarkers.
