Overview

Prepared Giant Typhonium Rhizome ("Typhonii Rhizoma Preparatum," or "Zhi Bai Fu Zi") is the processed tuber of plants in the Typhonium genus, most commonly Typhonium giganteum. It is a warm, acrid, and somewhat toxic herbal medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is traditionally prepared using specific methods (such as soaking in alum and other treatments) to reduce toxicity. Zhi Bai Fu Zi is principally used to dispel wind-phlegm, dry dampness, resolve lumps and nodules, and as an adjunct in formulations for treating disorders like facial paralysis, hemiplegia after stroke, migraine, epilepsy, tremors, and various nodular conditions. Despite its extensive use over centuries, its molecular mechanism and pharmacological targets remain insufficiently characterized by modern biomedical science.
