Preproinsulin is the initial, biologically inactive precursor to insulin, synthesized in the beta cells of the pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans). While preproinsulin itself has no direct biological activity, it serves as an essential precursor for functional insulin production. Proper processing ensures that only correctly folded and processed molecules become active hormone; defects can lead to diabetes due to insufficient or misfolded insulin production.
