Overview

Prevotella is a genus of Gram-negative, obligately anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacteria that constitute a significant portion of the human microbiota, particularly in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female reproductive tract (Wikipedia, 2023). While often existing as commensals, certain species such as Prevotella copri and Prevotella intermedia are frequently associated with inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, and bacterial vaginosis (NIH, 2021). As a genus, it is not a single molecular target like a receptor or enzyme but rather a biological taxon that may be modulated for therapeutic benefit. In clinical practice, Prevotella species are typically addressed through antimicrobial agents such as metronidazole or clindamycin when they act as pathogens in anaerobic infections (StatPearls, 2023). Recent research also explores the modulation of Prevotella levels through diet and probiotics to manage systemic inflammation and metabolic health.
