Prevotella bivia is a gram-negative, anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium frequently found in the female genital tract, especially in cases of bacterial vaginosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and associated infections such as endometritis and chorioamnionitis[1][3][4][5]. It is notable for producing ammonia and sialidase, both of which promote the growth and persistence of other vaginal pathogens, degrade cervicovaginal mucus, and support the formation of antibiotic-resistant biofilms[2][3][4]. The organism demonstrates significant resistance to key antibiotics (metronidazole, clindamycin, ceftriaxone), complicating management and contributing to recurrence of infections[3]. Prevotella bivia is detected by molecular assays targeting its DNA and by measurement of sialidase activity, which serves as a diagnostic marker for problematic vaginal microbiota states such as BV[4]. Because of its association with persistent and recurrent genital tract infections and its biofilm-forming capabilities, it remains a focus for research into both diagnostics and infection control strategies.
