Overview

Primaquine is a synthetic antimalarial agent belonging to the 8-aminoquinoline class of drugs, most commonly formulated as primaquine phosphate. It is *not* a biological target, but rather a drug that targets malaria-causing parasites (Plasmodium species) by eliminating their liver and gametocyte stages, thereby preventing relapse and ongoing transmission. Its precise molecular target in the parasite is not fully elucidated; the drug appears to disrupt mitochondrial function and generate oxidative stress, but the biochemical details remain unclear. Primaquine is an essential WHO medicine with a well-established safety profile, although it is contraindicated in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to risk of hemolytic anemia. It is widely available under several generic and brand names. Note: *Primaquine* is not a molecular target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter); it is a small molecule drug. If you intended a malaria parasite protein target or human target, please clarify or provide additional information.
