Overview

Pro-inflammatory cytokine reduction refers to the therapeutic strategies aimed at decreasing the levels or activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines—small, secreted proteins that play a central role in initiating and sustaining inflammation. These strategies target either the production/secretion of these molecules or block their interaction with receptors, thus mitigating downstream inflammatory responses. Excessive pro-inflammatory cytokines are implicated in numerous pathological conditions including autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, obesity-related complications and cancer progression. Reduction can be achieved through pharmacological inhibition, lifestyle modifications, endogenous regulation, and targeting cellular pathways.
