Overview

Pro-inflammatory monocytes are a functionally defined subset of circulating monocytes capable of producing high levels of inflammatory cytokines such as TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, and chemokines when stimulated, particularly via toll-like receptors[2][5][7]. In humans, the classical monocyte subset (CD14++CD16−) and the non-classical subset (CD14lowCD16++), depending on stimulus, can display pro-inflammatory functions, such as rapid secretion of cytokines, antigen presentation, phagocytosis, and orchestration of immune cell recruitment to sites of tissue damage or infection[1][5][8]. These cells play essential roles in host defense, but overactivation or dysregulation is implicated in the pathology of chronic inflammatory, autoimmune, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases[4][7]. "Pro-inflammatory monocyte" is an operational or descriptive label, not a unique molecular target or protein, and thus is not a canonical therapeutic target entity.
