Overview

Probable methyltransferase-like protein 24 (METTL24) is a member of the METTL (methyltransferase-like) family of enzymes, which are characterized by a conserved S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) binding domain typically involved in methylation of nucleic acids or proteins[1][7]. METTL24 is encoded by the human gene C6orf186 and is also referred to by several aliases including UPF0624 protein C6orf186 and dJ71D21.2. While its exact substrate(s) and molecular function remain unclear, METTL24 is increasingly recognized as being downregulated in several cancers, especially kidney renal clear cell carcinoma, where reduced expression correlates with poorer prognosis[2][5]. Functional studies suggest involvement in immune-relevant pathways, including cytokine binding, NF-κB pathway regulation, MHC complex function, and modulation of immune cell infiltration in the tumor microenvironment[2][5]. There are currently no known direct drug interactions or established therapeutic interventions targeting METTL24, but its prognostic and immunomodulatory associations highlight it as a novel cancer biomarker and candidate immune-relevant therapeutic target[2][5].
