Probable N-acetyltransferase 16 (NAT16)

Target
NAT16
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Acetyltransferase
01

Overview

N-acetyltransferase 16 is a protein-coding gene product classified as a probable acetyltransferase. In humans, NAT16 shows only trace enzyme activity for N-acetylation of L-histidine, and its physiological substrate remains unknown[2][6]. In ectothermic vertebrates such as ray-finned fishes, amphibians, and reptiles, the homologous enzyme (HISAT) encoded by the NAT16 ortholog is responsible for the brain- and lens-specific synthesis of Nα-acetylhistidine, suggesting a specialized evolutionary role[1]. In humans, expression data and functional annotation indicate limited activity and uncertain biological significance, with no reported involvement in major disease processes, therapeutic targeting, or drug interactions to date[2][3][4][5][6].
