Overview

"Probiotic bacteria" is a nonspecific, umbrella term referring to a diverse group of live microorganisms, primarily from genera such as *Lactobacillus*, *Bifidobacterium*, *Saccharomyces*, and others, which when administered in adequate amounts confer documented health benefits on the host. These are not single-molecule therapeutic targets but collections of microbial species and strains, each with distinct taxonomy, physiological traits, and mechanisms of action. Probiotics are most commonly applied to prevent or treat gastrointestinal disorders, restore microbial balance, support immune function, and act as adjuncts in the management of a variety of diseases. Accurate identification of probiotic strains is essential, often including genus, species, and strain designation. Notably, the term is too broad and not suitable for use as a canonical drug target without specifying organism and strain.
