Target intelligence / Profile preview
Procaspase-3 is the inactive zymogen form of caspase-3, a cysteine-aspartic acid protease that plays a central role in the execution phase of apoptosis (programmed cell death). Upon activation by initiator caspases, procaspase-3 is cleaved at specific aspartic residues, resulting in the formation of active caspase-3. Active caspase-3 then catalyzes the hydrolysis of hundreds of cellular substrates to execute apoptosis rapidly. Procaspase-3 levels are often elevated in tumor tissues.
