Overview

Procollagen C-endopeptidase enhancer 1 (PCOLCE) is a secreted glycoprotein that binds the C-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, enhancing its enzymatic removal by procollagen C-proteinases (such as BMP-1), thereby promoting maturation and assembly of fibrillar collagen in the extracellular matrix. PCOLCE participates in extracellular matrix remodeling, impacts immune cell migration and signaling, and plays a role in multiple pathological conditions including cancer, fibrosis, and defective tissue repair. It is highly expressed in certain tumor types and correlates with poor clinical prognosis and chemotherapy sensitivity. Its biological functions extend to regulation of immune responses and modulation of the tumor microenvironment.
