Progenitor cell activation refers to the process by which progenitor cells—biological cells with a limited capacity for self-renewal and differentiation—are stimulated to proliferate and differentiate in response to physiological cues, such as tissue injury or stress. Unlike stem cells, which can replicate indefinitely and are less specified, progenitor cells are more lineage-restricted (often oligopotent) and can only divide a finite number of times before differentiating into their target cell type.
