Progesterone receptor A (PR-A) is one of the two major isoforms of the progesterone receptor (PR), a nuclear hormone receptor that mediates the effects of progesterone. PR-A lacks the first 164 amino acids found in PR-B and can function as both a transcriptional activator and repressor, often antagonizing the effects of PR-B. It plays a crucial role in regulating reproductive tissue development and function, and is implicated in various diseases, including breast cancer and menstrual cycle disorders.
Ligand binding induces receptor dimerization, translocation to the nucleus, binding to progesterone response elements (PREs) on DNA, and recruitment of co-regulators to modulate gene transcription. PR-A can act as both a transcriptional activator and repressor, and can antagonize PR-B function.
