Programmed cell death mechanisms are a collection of genetically encoded and actively regulated processes by which cells die in an organized manner. These processes include apoptosis (cell shrinkage, DNA fragmentation), autophagy (self-digestion for cell survival or death), necroptosis and pyroptosis (inflammatory cell death), and ferroptosis (iron-dependent cell death).
