Programmed cell death protein 2 like (PDCD2L) is a human protein-coding gene closely related to programmed cell death protein 2 (PDCD2), a protein involved in the regulation of apoptosis and cell survival. PDCD2L shares sequence similarity with PDCD2, but its precise cellular role, mechanisms, and disease relevance remain incompletely characterized. Some studies suggest a possible involvement in the regulation of the cell cycle, apoptosis, and embryonic development, by analogy to PDCD2 and because of its expression patterns. However, unlike classic cell death pathway proteins such as caspases or death receptors, PDCD2L has not been clearly shown to function as a direct apoptosis regulator, receptor, or enzyme and does not appear to have direct clinical relevance as a therapeutic target at this time[3].
