Prohibitin 1 (PHB1)

Target
PHB1
Molecular classification
Chaperone protein, Scaffold protein, Mitochondrial protein
01

Overview

Prohibitin 1 (PHB1) is a highly conserved protein primarily localized to the inner mitochondrial membrane, but also found in the nucleus, cytosol, and plasma membrane. It functions as a chaperone or scaffold for respiratory chain proteins, maintaining optimal mitochondrial morphology and function, and regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. PHB1 is also involved in angiogenesis, transcriptional modulation, and cell signaling. It has been identified as a receptor for certain viruses and interacts with numerous other proteins to regulate diverse cellular events.
