Overview

Prohibitin 1 pseudogene 1 (PHB1P1, often referenced as PHBP1 in literature) is a processed pseudogene of the human PHB1 gene located on chromosome 6q25[2]. Pseudogenes like PHB1P1 do not encode a functional protein but can sometimes generate noncoding RNAs that regulate their parent genes or other genes via various mechanisms. Notably, upregulation of PHB1 pseudogene 1 transcript has been observed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC)[2]. The transcript can form an RNA duplex with PHB1 mRNA, protecting PHB1 mRNA from degradation and thus promoting PHB1 gene expression[2]. This regulatory effect has been linked to increased cell proliferation in ESCC, suggesting that PHB1P1 has a role in cancer biology through post-transcriptional regulation of the functional PHB1 gene. However, there is no evidence that PHB1P1 encodes a functional protein or acts as a therapeutic target in the conventional sense (receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.). Thus, PHB1P1 should not be considered a canonical drug target or biological receptor but rather a pseudogene-derived regulatory RNA with limited, context-specific biological impact that may warrant consideration as a cancer biomarker[2]. If a true drug target function is needed, the entry is incorrect; the correct target would be "Prohibitin 1 (PHB1)."
