Overview

A prohibitin pseudogene is a non-coding genomic copy or fragment derived from the prohibitin (PHB) gene, lacking the ability to encode a functional protein. Some prohibitin pseudogenes, such as PHBP1, can be transcribed and may regulate their parental gene's expression at the RNA level, occasionally being implicated in disease through such regulatory mechanisms. However, most prohibitin pseudogenes—including those corresponding to ambiguous identifiers such as ENSG00000283483—are not functionally characterized, are not considered druggable targets, and are not uniquely defined within the major gene nomenclature resources.
