Overview

PHB1 pseudogene 9 (PHB1P9) is classified as a pseudogene—a segment of DNA related by sequence to the functional PHB1 (prohibitin 1) gene but lacking evidence of coding a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as PHB1P9 are generally considered non-functional remnants that arise during evolution and do not have demonstrated biological or disease-associated roles. All known molecular and therapeutic relevance is related to PHB1, not its pseudogenes. PHB1 is a ubiquitously expressed mitochondrial and nuclear protein with regulatory roles in cell proliferation, apoptosis, signal transduction, and tumor suppression, but PHB1P9 itself is not known to produce protein or participate in these cellular processes. PHB1P9 does not meet classification as a therapeutic target, is considered nonfunctional, and only carries biological relevance by name similarity to PHB1.

Mechanism of action

None

03

Biological functions

None established for the pseudogene itself; parent gene (PHB1) is involved in mitochondrial function, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, signal transduction, and tumor suppression
04

Disease associations

None directly for PHB1P9; functions and disease associations pertain to the protein-coding PHB1 gene (such as roles in cancer, liver injury, metabolic regulation)
05

Biomarkers

None for PHB1P9; PHB1 protein expression has biomarker potential in cancer and other diseases
