Overview

Proinflammatory cytokine induction" refers to the biological process by which various immune and non-immune cells are stimulated to synthesize and secrete proinflammatory cytokines in response to pathogens, tissue damage, or stress signals. These cytokines—such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interferon gamma (IFN-γ)—coordinate the activation, differentiation, and recruitment of immune cells, and mediate host defense against infections and injuries[2][3][4]. Excessive or dysregulated proinflammatory cytokine induction can lead to pathological inflammation, tissue damage, or cytokine release syndromes (cytokine storms), as observed in some infectious and autoimmune diseases, including severe viral infections and sepsis[2][3][4]. Induction of these cytokines is mediated by signaling pathways such as NF-κB and the activation of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and cytokine receptors; these pathways are also considered targets of anti-inflammatory therapies, but "proinflammatory cytokine induction" itself is not a discrete molecular entity and should not be treated as a canonical drug target[2][3][4][5][6].
