Overview
Proinsulin is a polypeptide precursor to insulin, produced in the pancreatic beta cells. It is the immediate biosynthetic precursor from which both insulin and C-peptide are derived. Elevated blood levels can indicate type 2 diabetes or insulinoma. Proinsulin itself has minimal biological activity compared to mature insulin.
