Target intelligence / Profile preview
Proinsulin-specific regulatory T cells are a specialized subset of CD4(+) regulatory T lymphocytes that recognize epitopes derived from proinsulin, the precursor molecule to insulin. These cells play a critical role in maintaining self-tolerance and preventing autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells—a hallmark feature in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM)[3][4]. Experimental approaches such as mucosal administration or peptide-based immunotherapy can induce these antigen-specific regulatory T cells, which then suppress pathogenic autoreactive responses against islet antigens including proinsulin itself[3][5]. The induction and function of these proinsulin-reactive regulatory T cells are being explored as potential strategies for restoring immune tolerance and halting the progression or onset of type 1 diabetes. However, "proinsulin-specific regulatory T cell induction" is not itself a molecular target but rather an immunological process or therapeutic strategy aimed at expanding this beneficial population. Therefore, it does not fit standard definitions for drug targets such as receptors, enzymes, transporters, etc., making it an incorrect entry under conventional target nomenclature.
Induction of antigen-specific immune tolerance by suppressing autoreactive effector T cells[3][4][5]
