50S Ribosomal Subunit (Domain V) (50S (Domain V))

Target
50S (Domain V)
Molecular classification
Ribosomal Subunit, RNA, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

The 50S ribosomal subunit is the larger component of the prokaryotic 70S ribosome. Domain V of the 23S rRNA within the 50S subunit houses the peptidyl transferase center (PTC), which catalyzes peptide bond formation during protein synthesis. It is a primary target for many antibiotics, which inhibit protein synthesis by binding to sites on or near domain V. The subunit consists of 23S rRNA, 5S rRNA, and over 30 distinct proteins (r-proteins).
