Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) is a highly conserved protein found in the nuclei of eukaryotic cells and archaea. It functions primarily as a DNA clamp, acting as a processivity factor for DNA polymerase δ during DNA replication. PCNA forms a homotrimeric ring that encircles DNA, serving as a scaffold to recruit and coordinate various proteins involved in essential cellular processes such as DNA replication, repair, chromatin remodeling, epigenetic regulation, and cell cycle control. It is also explored as an anti-cancer drug target.
