Overview

Proliferation-associated 2G4 pseudogene 1 (PA2G4P1) is a human processed pseudogene within the PA2G4 gene family[3]. Unlike its functional counterpart (PA2G4, also known as ErbB3-binding protein 1/EBP1), which encodes an RNA-binding protein involved in growth regulation and is implicated in tumorigenesis, PA2G4P1 does not encode a functional protein and is not a conventional therapeutic or diagnostic target[1][5]. Several pseudogenes of PA2G4 exist (on chromosomes 3, 6, 9, 18, 20, and X)[1]. Some, most notably PA2G4P4, have been found to be transcriptionally active and may play regulatory roles in cancer by affecting cell proliferation, migration, and survival — especially in bladder cancer[2][4]. However, PA2G4P1 specifically has not yet been implicated in these functions or as a validated molecular target. For therapeutic and clinical research purposes, references to *functional* PA2G4 or even PA2G4 pseudogenes as drug targets should be checked for correct gene/pseudogene identity.
