Proline-rich protein pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene
01

Overview

A proline-rich protein pseudogene is a segment of human DNA with homology to functional proline-rich protein genes but contains disabling mutations that prevent it from being transcribed or translated into a functional protein. By definition, pseudogenes lack essential regulatory elements and/or have inactivating mutations, rendering them functionless as proteins[1][3]. They represent vestiges of former genes, contribute to genome evolution and rearrangement studies, and are not considered druggable or therapeutic targets. Rarely, some pseudogenes may produce regulatory RNAs or peptides, but these are exceptions and not applicable to the majority, including ENSG00000268922[1][3].
