Prolyl endopeptidase (PEP) is a serine protease that specifically cleaves peptide bonds at the carboxyl side of internal proline residues in peptides up to approximately 30 amino acids in length. It is involved in the degradation of neuropeptides and peptide hormones, as well as blood pressure regulation. Altered activity has been associated with neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, mania, clinical depression, and autism spectrum disorders. It also has therapeutic potential for celiac disease by degrading proline-rich gluten peptides.
